The city of Troy, which is the subject of Homer's epic poems, is located on the Asian shores of the Dardanelles, opposite the Gallipoli Peninsula. From the 8th century BC, the inhabitants of the Classical Period Ilion city, located at the westernmost point of a plateau about 5 km from the sea, believed that the city they lived in was Troy. This city was destroyed by a violent earthquake around 500 BC and was later abandoned. However, the name Troy continued to be mentioned in that region.
